What makes some women yearn for motherhood? And what makes some others want to stay away from this phase of life? These are probably perspectives that are hard to explain as they take origins from the respective environments that women find themselves today.
The Journey From A Teen To A Woman
It is certainly a very happening journey if not testing one’s grit and determination in life. For being a woman, is coming with one’s own set of complications and expectations.
And for a woman, growing up is best when blooming under the best of conditions. Period. And that includes the best of environment, the right shade of the sun, the best in self care and of course, lots and lots of love…
During this period of growth come the various ceremonies of life… events that make a huge impact on the tender minds that grow to decide for or against the stage of motherhood.
The teen grows into a woman and is witness to various situations in her life,
- Seeing someone in their family or close circles giving birth to a child
- Participating the baby shower and then in many subsequent phases of other’s lives
- Experiencing complex changes in one’s body functions from girlhood to womanhood
- Crossing the path of love and attraction with the multiple hues of a relationship therein
- Witnessing close relatives struggle as parents, the exhaustion, confusion, sleeplessness…
The Opportunity Window To Become A Mother
Then comes that phase in probably every woman’s life, the opportunity to step into Motherhood. It may be through an act of marriage or taking the route to single parenthood. Here many women who take the decision of step into motherhood are blessed with natural pregnancy, while some have to resort to artificial reproductive treatments.  And then there are few who have this question, does becoming a mother define womanhood?
Certainly, one must have this question and a counter question for that is, “What  do you want out of your life?” A very tricky and at times a difficult question to answer.
For the very existence of a woman has been through centuries associated to the gradual progression into a mother. As social animals, you, me and everybody must have experienced the sacrosanct relationship between a mother and her child.
Sharing a quote from True Woman 101:
Every normal woman is equipped to be a mother. Certainly, not every woman in the world is destined to make use of her biological equipment. But motherhood, in a much deeper sense, is the essence of womanhood. The first woman’s name affirms and celebrates this truth: Eve means “life-giver.” God’s purpose is that every woman—married or single, fertile or infertile—will bring forth life. Regardless of her marital status, occupation, or age, a woman’s greatest aim ought to be to glorify God and further His kingdom by reproducing—bearing spiritual fruit.
So arriving at a conclusion for “…does becoming a mother define womanhood?” sounds easier said than done in this modern world.
Why Some Believe Womanhood ≠Motherhood
Most of us might have come across young women who say they do not wish to have children of their own. For some it might be simply the feeling to continue with their occupations and lives rather than take additional responsibility; and for some it may be the apprehension of pregnancy or a prior experience with miscarriage and loss of live.
There are probably many other reasons why some women prefer not to bear kids. And we believe such feelings must be respected. However, that doesn’t leave us, the larger society any better. Respecting womanhood as much as motherhood, and providing support plus respect at the various levels of society is our collective responsibility towards humankind.
Celebrating The Beauty of Motherhood
On this International Women’s Day 2017, we wish all women towards their unparalleled contribution towards humankind. And for those who are considering or are working towards growing into their next phase in life, no time is better than now.

For one to become a mother, the one most important factor is age.
Quoting from Wikipedia,
A woman’s fertility peaks lasts during the twenties and first half of thirties, after which it starts to decline, with advanced maternal age causing an increased risk of female infertility.
According to Henri Leridon, PhD, an epidemiologist with the French Institute of Health and Medical Research, of women trying to get pregnant, without using fertility drugs or in vitro fertilization:
- At age 30
- 75% will have a conception ending in a live birth within one year
- 91% will have a conception ending in a live birth within four years.
- At age 35
- 66% will have a conception ending in a live birth within one year
- 84% will have a conception ending in a live birth within four years.
- At age 40
- 44% will have a conception ending in a live birth within one year
- 64% will have a conception ending in a live birth within four years.
It’s now time to say, there can be a better womanhood beyond motherhood!
