Question: What Are Risks Of Having Test Tube Baby?

“We have been unable to have a baby since we got married about 7 years ago. My wife is aged 32 and I am 35. Recently we started exploring fertility issues that may be causing this delay, but are concerned about associate risks with IVF treatment. Can you share some information to guide us?”

Answer: Test tube babies are on par with normally conceived children…

“It is important to note that, every couple that goes for test tube baby process or IVF treatment, the challenges are similar to any normal pregnancy case. However, in case of an IVF treatment, there are additional fertility drugs and medications given to the patient and that may increase the intensity of above challenges.

But compared to rate of birth defects in normal pregnancy cases, that is about 3% for major defects and around 6% if minor defects are included; for IVF treatment cases, this rate of major birth defects may be 4% to 5%. However, medical research shows test tube babies are on par with children born through normal process in both academics as well as behavioral and psychological aspects.”
