Nikieta was in despair. Someone in her extended family, a “typically large” Indian family, had recently shared the good news of pregnancy. And though she was happy for that person, she also felt a tinge of sadness for herself. Because, in-spite of trying for 4 good years after marriage, she was still waiting for the her own good news… and so was her mother – in – law (MiL).

The hardest thing about “everything happens for a reason”
is waiting for the reason to come along.

How To Get Pregnant? The Infertility Taboo

In many regions across the globe, the word “infertility” is still a taboo. And many people are still ignorant of the fact that infertility can be in a man and woman both. Or for that matter, approximately 20% infertility cases are because of problem in men and around 40%-50% are due to problem in women. Or that there are more combination of factors, in both partners, that can cause infertility. But discussing such topics with family members, especially with MILs, can be certainly difficult for many women.

And then there are the umpteen number of times a person like Nikieta has to face… constant and very annoying comments on “How To Get Pregnant”. Here, the MIL can be extra annoying, though this doesn’t apply to everyone; and in-fact there are many MILs who are indeed very supportive. But if not, such comments could extend to lengthy sessions on traditional therapies to get pregnant, or intermittently absurd and uncomfortable comments on procreative sleeping positions and more… and like in Nikieta’s case, it was her MIL’s consistent rant on:

  • “Hope I can be a grandmother in this life” or
  • “Everyone I see on the roads is a grandmother, except me!” or
  • “I know my son’s little boy can make a woman very happy… whats wrong with you?”

A Few Things Your MiL Needs To Know About Infertility

The MIL, when aware of the various causes of infertility can be a daughter-in-law’s greatest friend. So here are some important things to share with the MiL when the above situation arises…

  1. The man’s weight can affect his fertility – The MiL needs to understand that if her son is overweight, he is likely to have a poor sperm quality as compared to that of a comparatively healthy male. Moreover, obesity can lead to hormonal changes that can further reduce his fertility and make him less interested in the desired procreative steps. Plus obesity could lead to problems with erection and that can add up to the chances of the spouse not being able to conceive.
  2. His smoking can impair the wife’s chances of conceiving – For the MiL who has a smoker in her son, it is important to know that the chances of getting pregnant can be delayed. Plus his smoking habit can be the daughter-in-law’s passive smoking and that can further affect the health of their future child!
  3. The MiL’s Son’s Age Matters Too – As happens with women, with age, a man too looses his fertility. Infact, by the age of 40, the man’s fertility starts declining and this could lead to other challenges with his wife’s pregnancy. Like there could be developmental disorders with the child and a higher risk of miscarriage. Or if the couple has married late, or if they had decided to have a child at a later age, age could be one of the challenges to get pregnant.

So the MiL should be made aware of this.
